Hussar 2012 - Report

German Translation below
Greetings, my most colorful friends!

Im am currently on a train back to Berlin after what I can only call a teriffic weekend: Visiting the Hussar 2012 in Warsaw, Poland.

I got a lot to talk about - but with 5 hours of trainride in front of me, I think I will be able to tell it all ;)

How did I find out about the Hussar?

Actually, I do not remember... One of the many forums and/or blogs that I read must have mentioned it. I then tried to find more information and did not find any. Apparently, the website had been hacked and a new one was not up yet. The website came back around 4-6 weeks prior to the event - which left a lot of people too little time to actually plan for the trip. I am sure this will be adressed for next year.

I found it kind of funny, that even someone from Poland found out about the event on my blog :D (Hello Brovatar!)

So, what is the Hussar ?

Well, I got two answers for that...

1. (Wikipedia) "The word hussar derives from the Serbian Gusar and later Hungarian Husar. Exiled Serbian warriors introduced hussar horsemen – light cavalry armed with hollowed lance, Balkan-type shield, and saber – in Hungary following the Ottoman conquest of Serbia in the late 15th century.
The Hussars of Poland originated in the late 15th century of Serbian warriors that had left Ottoman Serbia, beginning in the 14th century."

2. The Hussar is the most important miniature painting competition in Poland. It is held once a year in the "Dom Kultury Rakowiec" in Warsaw. It is located about 5km southwest of the Warsaw Central Railstation and it will cost your around 25 zloty (6€) by taxi to get there.

The Dom Kultury is a spaceious building with multiple (exhibition) rooms, stage, a snackbar/restaurant. Perfect for an event like the Hussar.

In 2012 there were four categories for miniatures: Single Fantasy, Single Sci-Fi, Large Scale and Diorama. The judges were positively lenient with the rules - a small 54mm mini was allowed for Single instead of large scale, for example. Worked just fine for everyone.

We all know that some of the most productive and best painters in the world are from Poland. And that is what makes the Hussar so exciting. Bohun. Ana. Karol Rudyk, Arthur, Loler, Members of Chest of Colors, and and an... just to name a few (I am sure I forgot half of them ;), sorry!). Anyways, it sounds like the CMON who-is-who. This year, the Russian Painter Nakatan  was "the other foreigner" besides not-so-famous old me ;)

Having said this, even though there were "only" 80 or so entries, the level of competiton was very high. When I saw Loler's Freehand-Monster Knight, my jaws simply dropped. Of course, some people do not like "too many" freehands on a miniature, but one simply cannot deny the sheer craftmanship behind his work. My personal favorite right from the start, however, was Nakatan's Duel/Diorama, which ended up winning the coveted Hussar Sabre AND a return ticket to the Crystal Brush 2013 in the USA.

Predicting winner's seems to be something that I am quite good at :D GD Germany, GD UK and Hussar 2012 - That makes 3 out of 3 :)

But I am getting ahead of myself.

During the morning the event was all about meet-and-greet (while turning in minis, of course). At first I was a little nervous about not being able to speak ANY polish (my bad), but it turned out that it was not a problem at all. Most people I talked to spoke English very well. And talking we did - all day long. Everyone - and I MEAN everyone - was so friendly and fun to talk to - it was amazing. I definitely felt like a part of the event and not like an outsider at all.

On the second floor one could find two vendors with a rich assortment of miniatures of all kinds of manufacturers. I was actually very impressed with some of the maxmini stuff that I saw in "real life" for the first time. I think I am gonna order one or two of their bloodbowl ork heads and the Starwars-Rolling-Necrons :D

Ooops!
I did it again :)
The stage with a small theatre-like setup is also located on the second floor. In the afternoon all kinds of events such as speedpainting, painting presentations (contrast) and a zbrush presentation were held. Even though I did not understand more than 10 words total, maybe, I found both presentations quite interesting. As always, the speedpainting event was a lot of fun. Speedpainting always is. Until you splurge the red Vallejo paint all over the place :D

Around 6pm we were able to pick up our miniatures and we all gathered in the theatre where the presentation of the winners was held.

I think everyone agreed that the judges did a very good job selecting the winners.

More giveaways? This is MADNESS!

The winner of the event was Nakatan. Of course, you carefully red this article and already knew that. But do you know his full real name? Check my Facebook Page and find out! Why? Because you could win one of 40 (!!!!!) limited hussar 2012 miniatures - a massive not-squig (:)) with a Hussar Goblin on top. Leave your Blogger Account Name in the comments on the Facebook entry that reveals Nakatan's real name. I will draw the winner next sunday! It does not get easier than this to win awesome stuff ;)

Nakatan, btw, is a really nice guy. I talked to him quite a bit (of course in English) about his work as a professional painter in Moscow. I hope his Visa application for the US will go through and I will meet him again 2013 at the Crystal Brush (which I was corrected will be held in Chicago on April 21st, 2013).

Nakatan, with sword, trophies and beautiful wife :)

Paaaaartyyyyyyyyyyy!
After the award presentation many of the participants sat together in the restaurant section for a few hours and had some food and a beer or two. Or three :)

At this point I would like to wholeheartedly express my thanks to the members of the polish painting community for making us feel welcome and especially for speaking english so much! I promise that I will learn some Polish for next year ;)

Oh - and I promise to come back next year. Hussar 2013 - I can't wait!

Hallo meine farbenfrohen Freunde!

Was also ist der Hussar?

Nun, ich habe zwei Antworten dafür:

  6. I really like the reports :) Too bad I can't go to Eindhoven in two(?) weeks, would've been fun seeing some people in real life and actually have a chat with them instead of the avatar and typing on the computer ;)
